Recovery Principle 7

As A Person Thinks, So They Are. - Trauma and Neurobiology

“If you want to be happy, do not dwell in the past, do not worry about the future, focus on living fully in the present.”                                                                    ― Roy T. Bennett

Do you struggle with questions or feelings like…

Why do I react strongly to normal or innocent situations?

Why do I at times behave in negative ways?

Is your internal “self-talk” mostly negative so that you feel like a failure?

This Seventh Recovery Principle examines your internal thoughts; what you feel and say to yourself.  Sadly, the neurobiology of many spiritual abuse survivors has been altered in negative ways due to the trauma they experienced.  Neuroscientists and psychologists recognize that traumatic spiritual abuse can “rewire” a survivor’s perception of reality.

This negatively impacts their sense of the world, their relationships, and their ability to regulate their emotions and thoughts.  The good news, however, is that the brain can be rewired through effective therapy and perseverance.
