Recovery Principle 5
Serving God In All The Wrong Places. - Trauma and Spiritual Foundations

“Most people who are victims of spiritual abuse are sincerely seeking God. When they realize later that they have been involved in an unhealthy, abusive system, it is understandable that they may harbor resentment and bitterness against the leadership and against God himself.” Ron Enroth - Recovering From Churches That Abuse
Do you struggle with questions or feelings like…
I just wanted to serve God, and it became a nightmare. He let me down.
How can I ever trust God again? I don’t know what to believe anymore.
Was I really following God? I am so angry and bitter.
I thought that I had found the truth. Did I build my entire life on a lie?
The Fifth Recovery Principle touches the core of what it means to be human: identity, purpose, and meaning. For this reason, it is the most confusing and difficult principle to work through but also the most necessary. Generally, spiritual abuse survivors avoid dealing with this because it is a painful and daunting process. It requires dismantling the twisted belief system that fueled all the spiritual abuse, keeping what was good, and discarding the bad.
