Recovery Principle 3

When You Accept What Actually Happened Change is Possible - Trauma Recovery

“Whatever we wish to achieve in the future, it must begin by knowing where we are in the present- not where we wish we were, or where we wish others to think we are, but where we are in fact.”  Thomas Sowell

Have you ever said to yourself something like…

Even though I have some struggles, there is nothing wrong with me.

I don’t need counseling; this will pass like it has before.

Others from the group may have some major problems, but I don’t.

I can deal with this on my own, I’m fine.

This is the Third Recovery Principle and the Third Foundational Principle.  Many survivors of destructive groups suffer grievously due to a denial of the trauma experienced while involved in a spiritually abusive environment.  For a host of reasons, many traumatized spiritual abuse victims find it very difficult to “own” or accept what happened to them.  When such denial dominates, positive change cannot occur.
