Recovery Principle 1

There Is Nothing Wrong With You; Something Happened To You. - Trauma and Identity

“There comes a time when the victim becomes a survivor, and that is when the hard work begins.”  TV Program – Law and Order

Do you struggle with questions or feelings like…

Who am I?

What defines me?

Why is it so hard to get my life together?

Feelings of confusion, worthlessness, incompetence, failure?

Difficulty trusting people?

This is the first of the Ten Principles of Recovery which are divided into three categories:

• Foundational

• Highly Recommended

• Moving Forward.

The road to recovery begins with understanding what is necessary for a healthy sense of self. For those who were recruited into a spiritually abusive group (commonly referred to as First Generation Adults, FGA) this requires rebuilding what was damaged by the destructive group. For those born or raised in a spiritually destructive group (commonly referred to as Second Generation Adults, SGA), it requires forming a healthy sense of self for the first time.
